American Gold Star Mothers lay wreath at Tomb of the Unknowns, Gold Star Mothers Sunday, 09/26/05 Soldiers looking at Vietnam Wall Memorial Francis Turley at a funeral for a forgotten veteran. One of the many markers at Arlington Cemetery remembered by a mother Perpetuating the noble principles for which they fought and died.

This celebration, to bring together families of America’s fallen in Iraq and Afghanistan and honor the sacrifice they have made, was held at the Washington Monument on Sunday May 21, 2006. This is the first time that these families have been brought together. Over 3000 family members from every state and several territories attended. This tribute honors those who have died in service to their country, and the families they left behind.

The event featured the inauguration of the Gold Medal of Remembrance honoring children of our fallen, a ringing of a replica of the Liberty Bell by wounded troops, a fly over, and video presentations by the History Channel specifically for the ceremony.

Also, for the first time a family descendant of a service member lost in each of our Nation’s wars will be recognized to represent all of the fallen from that particular war. Some of these representatives include descendants of Nathan Hale, Henry Clay Jr., Quentin Roosevelt, Randall Shughart, and the Sullivan Brothers.
